Linux- Slowly He Learned
Hugh is a Linux guy and a damned good one! he has been urging us for quite a while to switch from windows to Linux and I must say that his arguments have made sense. So on my last visit out to see him and Clara he installed an early version of Ubuntu on my laptop and actually got the winmodem working. I dabbled with it but never switched fulltime. More recently I took an old machine I had to a Linux guy in SSM who installed an up-to-date version of Ubuntu and made sure that all the bits worked properly. It works a treat. After that the screen on my laptop crapped out and when I took it to my friend Ryan to get it replaced among other tweeks he installed an up-to-date version of Linux. I’m staring to get serious about this especially since I now have a wireless router attached to my satellite internet connection so I can take the laptop anywhere in the house and be connected. When in windows (my laptop has a partitioned hd and so two operating systems) – Here comes the but……… but Ubuntu will not recognize my wireless card, a Linksys Speed Booster G. Now if I have learned anything from Hugh it is this. Use Google, you can find out how do almost anything related to computers. So I closed Ubuntu, opened windows and Googled my card and Ubuntu compatible. Sure enough I got lots of hits. Do this, check that, change the other thing using the command line. All good ideas except that I’m in windows and Ubuntu is somewhere else sort of, I think. This computer is not hooked to a printer and my retention time for large amounts of technical data and complicated instructions is on a par with a goldfish. But I did discover some things – my Linksys card has a Broadcom chipset, I am probably going to have to download and install some software to make this work and I am going to have to work on/at(?) the command line which I access by opening a terminal. I remember Hugh showing me how to open a terminal about 5 years ago so while I know that I can do this I don’t have a friggin’ clue how. I could have called Hugh to ask him how to open a terminal but he is 3 time zones west, is just home from work and besides I want to figure this out for myself. Now this whole thing started because I got a birthday present from Hugh and Clara the other day, a copy of Ubuntu Linux For Non-Geeks. After sitting staring at the screen for many minutes waiting patiently for a sign I had a blinding glimpse of the obvious – why don’t I look in the book! . Sure enough on page 140 there were the words I was looking for. So I went and opened a terminal. I couldn’t do anything because I had forgotten all in the things I read earleir (SEE REFERENCE TO GOLDFISH MEMORY) but I had the terminal open. I was so excited I decided to close Linux, open windows and blog this story. This has taken me almost two hours but it is progress. I will continue to blog this adventure. Good night!

Pecorino Romano
This one is for the cheese fairy. Last night I made a pasta dish that we saw on tv a couple of weeks ago. We started with whole wheat linguine and dressed it with butter, black pepper, real pecorino romano cheese and chopped spinach. It was very very good. I went to a grocery store in SSM that sells a lot of very good quality imported Italian cheeses and other goodies. I got a large piece of real Italian Romano Pecorino. I had never tried it before. Yesterday when I opened the package to make supper I took a taste and boy is it good. very salty with a sharp edge. I googled it today and found out that it is made from sheep’s milk! The butter and the cheese and some of the water from the pasta pot made a yummy sauce. If you decide to try this make sure that you use real butter.
BTW #1 son sent me a picture of a loaf of his home made bread the other day and it looks lovely enough that I just have to put it in here. Well done.
